Central Texas is filled with scenic hiking trails that wind you through cliffs made of limestone, rolling hills with flowers and unique trees, and wildlife to spot. Whether you are searching for the best hiking trails in the area to check them off your bucket list or want to enjoy nature with your family, the Texas Hill Country offers something for everyone. In this guide, we’ll explore each of the best hiking trails in the Texas Hill Country for scenic views, challenging terrain, and family-friendly experiences. Plus, we’ll show you the best place to stay during your trip to immerse yourself in nature.

As one of the most famous spots for hiking in the Texas Hill Country, you can’t miss Enchanted Rock. Located near the town of Fredericksburg, this large granite dome is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Central Texas. There are several hiking trails in the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. They range from easy nature strolls to challenging hikes with steep summit climbs. If you choose to hike the Enchanted Rock Summit Trail, you will be rewarded with a gorgeous scenic overlook. Here, you’ll find panoramic views of the surrounding hills at the top.

Colorado Bend State Park is another great destination for hiking in the Texas Hill Country, especially for waterfalls and natural springs. Colorado Bend has over 35 miles of trails in the park, with varied terrain and difficulty levels. Some of the most popular hikes here are the Spicewood Springs and Gorman Falls Trails. Spicewood Springs will take you past swimming holes and waterfalls. For the Gorman Falls Trail, be sure to pack your hiking shoes! This popular trail goes through rocky terrain and includes some steep climbs. The park also boasts mountain biking trails that are fun for bikers of any experience level.

Located along the Guadalupe River in the western Hill Country, Garner State Park is another fantastic Texas state park for hiking. This park is especially known for its family-friendly trails that feature shaded paths, mild terrain and river views. Plus, after a day of hiking in the park, you can go for a swim in the river. For a longer hike, the Frio Canyon Trail is a fun choice. This loop trail takes you along the Frio River, which makes for an awesome family stroll. For more of a challenge, Old Baldy Trail is a steep climb but very short, and a popular hike for families with older kids. When hiking in the Texas Hill Country with kids, it is always important to follow trail etiquette and the “leave no trace” principles.

For those who enjoy a more relaxed, laid-back hiking experience, Government Canyon State Natural Area might make a great fit. Located about an hour northwest of San Antonio, this Texas Hill Country state natural area is full of stunning landscapes and over 40 miles of hiking trails. One unique thing here that you won’t find with other hikes in the Texas Hill Country is preserved dinosaur tracks. Here, you can find fossil tracks for two different dinosaurs that are 110 million years old.

Situated just outside of Austin, the Barton Creek Greenbelt offers visitors trails that wind through limestone cliffs, swimming holes, and forested areas. Some swimming holes to stop at on your adventures here include Gus Fruh, Sculpture Falls, and Twin Falls. Twin Falls is especially scenic, with its beautiful limestone falls. For swimming, it is always important to plan ahead and make sure that the water levels are optimal.

About an hour drive west of Austin, Pedernales Falls State Park is situated near Johnson City on the Pedernales River. Outdoor enthusiasts love the state park Pedernales for the many activities available here. In the state park, you can hike, bike, have a picnic, go bird watching, or even go horseback riding. Although the park is best known for the river and falls, there are several incredible hiking trails. There are short trails that lead you straight to viewing spots for the falls, and longer trails for a more adventurous trek.

If you want a combination of convenience to several natural areas, and a fun downtown area to explore, we recommend Wimberley, Texas. Not only is this town well-located for its proximity to many areas to explore, but it is also known for its welcoming environment and lively downtown. With a stay in Wimberley, you can adventure in the parks by day, and wander the pedestrian-friendly streets at night.

If you want to take your vacation to the next level and fully immerse yourself in nature, there is no better way to do it than to stay in a nature-focused resort. The Onera Wimberley is a one-of-a-kind nature resort experience that will have you locked in to adventure from the moment you arrive. The accommodations here are not your typical hotel. In fact, this is a “landscape hotel,” where treehouses are perched 35 feet in the air. During your stay here, you’ll experience gorgeous sunsets from your own private balcony. What’s more, your balcony even comes with your own personal hot tub!
