Located near the charming town of Wimberley, Jacob’s Well Natural Area is a perennial karstic spring that is recognized as one of the most incredible natural springs in the state. At the headwaters of Cypress Creek, this spring has been flowing continuously for thousands of years. Nature lovers find this area to be a great place to visit for its ecological and historical significance. Jacob’s Well is not only a beloved Texas landmark but also the subject of scientific studies and conservation efforts. Flowing from the Trinity Aquifer, the spring feeds Cypress Creek, supports plants, and provides habitat for wildlife.
The spring itself looks like a 12-foot-wide, dark-blue hole where water emerges from underground caverns, and it is an amazing sight. Visiting the site gives a firsthand look at how interconnected natural water cave systems are, and how we can help protect them for future generations.
In the past, Jacob’s Well was known as a swimming hole where you could soak in the spring’s natural waters. Unfortunately, to keep both the spring and visitors to the park safe, swimming has not been permitted since June 2022. This is because of extremely low water levels from the Trinity Aquifer. Prior to this change, visitors could book an online reservation to swim. With that swimming reservation, you could take a dip in the clear water at a particular time, helping keep the spring from getting too crowded. While swimming availability may recur in the future, the Hays County Parks Department has not found sustainable levels for reopening swimming since 2022.
Although you aren’t able to swim at this point in time, Jacob’s Well in Texas is open daily for viewing and hiking the natural area. The area features walking trails that wind through stunning woodlands filled with bald cypress, live oak, and Ashe juniper trees. On the trails, you can look at native plants, spot birds, and see butterflies. This natural area is also very popular for photography because of its stunning beauty. In addition to the surrounding areas, the well itself photographs beautifully with such clear water and limestone formations. There are also plenty of benches and observation points to enjoy the views for as long as you would like. When you are done viewing the spring, picnic tables and rest areas are available throughout the preserve, making it a relaxing place to spend a few hours.
Jacob’s Well, Texas, is open for sightseeing every day from 8 AM to 6 PM, with the last visitors allowed to enter at 5:30 PM. Hours can vary by season, so be sure to check the official website for the latest updates. Since swimming in the spring is currently unavailable, reservations are not required. It is also important to note that some areas of the park may be unavailable depending on when you visit. This preserve has active conservation efforts in place, and that means there are occasional closures.
With so many beautiful areas to explore, be sure to pack some comfortable walking shoes! The park staff maintains the trails well, but since it is a natural area, the ground can be uneven in some places. Visitors are also encouraged to follow the “Leave No Trace” seven principles put out by the U.S. National Park Service. These principles encourage park visitors to be mindful of how their actions can impact plants, animals, and other people.

This park is 126 acres and famous for its clear-water swimming hole surrounded by cypress trees. There are also over 4.5 miles of hiking trails, giving you another great opportunity to explore. This park does require swimming reservations, so make sure to plan those in advance! The Blanco River and Cypress Creek corridors are also nearby and popular for fishing, hiking, and kayaking when conditions allow.
