Located near one of the country’s most-visited national parks, Bar Harbor, MN, is a popular tourist destination in New England. If you’re planning on visiting Acadia National Park for your summer vacation this year, then you deserve better lodging options than your standard hotel. Here’s our complete guide to glamping in Bar Harbor, Maine.
Camping is a wonderful experience, but not everyone is keen on roughing it. Yes, there’s something romantic about waking up surrounded by nature. It’s just that the whole experience is dampened when you need to sleep on the ground. Hotels are undoubtedly more comfortable, but many of them are firmly entrenched in developed areas. You’re not sleeping in nature so much as you are adjacent to it.
Glamping bridges the gap between traditional camping and the resort experience. Its name is a portmanteau of “glamorous” and “camping,” and while the practice might seem new, it’s older than feudalism. Monarchs, military officers, and other VIPs have been staying in luxurious field accommodations for years, and some of the most common glamping sites draw inspiration from traditional yurts and safari tents. However, since its inception, glamping accommodations have become increasingly elaborate, featuring structures such as treehouses and miniature cabins.
Glamping lets you enjoy the beauty of nature without sacrificing the comforts typically found in hotels. These sites offer real beds, private bathrooms, and electricity. No need for sleeping bags and portable stoves here. Many sites also offer outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, stargazing, and nature excursions.

Home to the largest mountain on the Atlantic coast, Acadia National Park consists of mountainous, rocky islands and coastlines. The most dense area of the park is Mount Desert Island, which is anything but deserted. Bar Harbor and its surrounding towns are located on the island, nestled between the rocky peaks and cliffs.
Acadia is rich in natural beauty, historic landmarks, and some of the most beautiful sights you’ll see along the Atlantic coast. Here are a few examples of what this incredible park has to offer.
The star of Acadia National Park is its largest peak: Cadillac Mountain. This mountain is famous as one of the first places in the continental US where you can see the sunrise, and its elevation and location make it an important radio communications hub. Hiking trails lead up to the mountain summit, but you can also take a three-mile scenic drive. Driving Cadillac Summit Road is highly recommended, as the road offers scenic pull-offs and incredible views of Mount Desert Island. However, reservations are required to avoid crowding.
Acadia National Park features dozens of bike paths and hiking trails on both Mount Desert Island and the nearby Schoodic Peninsula. These hikes vary in difficulty and environment, ranging from rugged mountain paths to curated boardwalks and low-lying gravel roads. Accessibility varies, so check the park’s official hiking guide for more detailed information.
Bikes aren’t allowed on hiking trails, but they’re encouraged on the carriage road network on Mount Desert Island. The carriage roads are also popular with pedestrians seeking a less strenuous hike, birders, and horseback riders. You can even book a carriage ride during the summer.
All trailheads, as well as the carriage roads, are served by the fare-free Island Explorer bus service. These buses are ADA-Accessible and pet-friendly, and come equipped with bike racks. However, e-bikes and certain mobility devices might not fit on board. You also need a valid park entry pass to enter Acadia National Park, even if you are entering by bus.
Acadia National Park is a prime spot for kayaking and boating, thanks to the clear waters and gorgeous scenery. Hopping in a kayak and watching the land rise around you is a sublime experience, especially if you go out on a slightly foggy day. Not enough to affect visibility, but enough that the mist clings to the trees like an aura of smoke.
If the weather is warm enough, you can go swimming at one of the park’s three beaches. Echo Lake and Lake Wood are freshwater swimming beaches, while Sand Beach is a more traditional ocean beach. While you’re here, consider taking a tour of one of the many tidepools in the area. They’re teeming with marine life, including sea stars, crabs, and small fish.

Terramor Outdoor Resort is a full-service glamping destination in Bar Harbor, Maine. Located near Acadia National Park and a designated stop for the Island Explorer, Terramor is the perfect place to relax, unwind, and unplug. Although the last one is optional, there is still Wi-Fi so that you can stream the perfect camping playlist.
Terramor offers five styles of platformed tents, each with hotel-like amenities. All tents include a cooler, a portable heater, electricity, Wi-Fi, complementary pour-over coffee, and luxury toiletries. However, each glamping tent offers unique amenities and charm, allowing you to tailor your experience to your comfort level.
The Alder tents are the most rustic that Terramor offers, as they’re the only option without an en-suite bathroom. You’ll need to walk to the bathhouse to shower, though you’ll have your own dedicated space. Despite this minor inconvenience, the Alder tents are among the best deals Terramor offers, accommodating five guests and featuring a beautiful wooden interior.
Each tent features a queen bed and three twin beds in a communal space. The screened porch provides a beautiful spot to eat breakfast or admire the landscape as you sip your morning coffee. They’re perfect for families looking for a bit of outdoor fun, but who don’t need the bells and whistles of the fancier tents.
A step up from Alder are the Bayberry and Birch options, which sleep two and five guests respectively. These tents are more lavishly appointed than the Alder tents, with full en suite bathrooms and private steamer showers. Both tent styles feature private fire pits, ideal for s’mores or quiet nights under the stars.
Both tents feature plush king-size beds, while the five-person options add a bunk bed in a separate room. The bottom bunk is a double, while the top bunk is a smaller twin. Adult-only groups may find the tents slightly less spacious than families with children.
The most luxurious glamping options at Terramor Outdoor Resort, these two and five-person glamping tents feature a secluded outdoor shower, in addition to the amenities of the Bayberry and Birch tents. These outdoor showers are a luxurious experience meant to help guests connect with nature, and they’re perfect for taking a moment of relaxation. However, you can still shower inside if you prefer.
Terramor is closed in winter, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t amazing winter adventures in the Northeast.

Of course, glamping is more than having a nice tent. While being surrounded by Maine’s peaceful, dark forests is undoubtedly a draw, even the most outdoorsy of us can be tempted by a good meal. Terramor Outdoor Resort more than delivers on this front, with on-site dining and recreation.
The Lodge is the hub of Terramor Outdoor Resort, serving meals and providing information about local attractions. It will likely be your first stop every morning, thanks to the complimentary continental breakfast. For an added fee, you can indulge in a meal at the on-site restaurant or enjoy locally brewed beers at the bar.
If you want to do your own cooking, you can purchase a grilling kit from The Lodge. These come with all the ingredients and tools you need to craft your own outdoor dining experience. The on-site chef crafts each kit and includes detailed instructions for using the outdoor grills.
The Field is the hub of outdoor activities at Terramor Outdoor Resort. This is where you go for s’mores, live music, or to relax in the heated pool and hot tub. You can also learn more about the nature and history of Acadia National Park, including talks about local wildlife.
One of Terramor’s unique offerings is its apiary. The resort employs an on-site beekeeper, and guests can book their own beekeeping experience during their stay. There are also regular beekeeping talks where you can learn about the role of bees in preserving the environment. Oh, and there’s honey, of course. That’s the best part.
